Metric Steel Shafts
AISI 1045
Turned, Ground & Polished
This is a fully killed steel produced to fine grain practice
by the electric arc, or basic oxygen furnace process. Its relatively
high strength coupled with reasonably good ductility makes it a
natural choice for miscellaneous parts such as shafts and gears.
This
grade may be water quenched to high hardness levels in small sizes.
It does not, however, have sufficient hardenability to attain high
core hardness in large sections. It is commonly specified for parts
that are to be surface hardened by induction or flame heat-treating
methods.
Special
welding procedures are required in welding this grade because its
relatively high carbon and manganese content promote high hardness
and brittleness in the heat-affected zone.
It
is the most common shafting steel in the medium carbon range and
is available here in metric sizes.
